What To Expect When You’re Expecting … a Job.

If you’re an IT professional, chances are you’ve worked with a recruiter at some point in time, if not regularly. Some often view recruiters as a necessary evil, which makes us pout a bit. Only because we know it doesn’t have to be that way. Get a better experience by identifying the good from the bad.

Here’s what to look for in a recruiter:

A True Conversation

Stick this little tidbit in your pocket: a recent U.S. News survey indicated that 80% of job seekers would prefer a position they loved over one with a high salary. Surprised? Well whether this is true for you or not, it just illustrates the point that a recruiter should take the time to get to know you and gain a basic understanding of your wants and needs. (Not just assume them.) You wouldn’t marry someone three minutes after meeting them, would you? So why settle for a three-minute conversation when it comes to finding a job? Let’s think long-term here.

Over Communication

You should be annoyed with your recruiter. Ok, not really. But that’s how often you should hear from them. A good recruiter will provide you with as much info as possible and keep you in the loop all steps of the way. If you don’t hear from the recruiter, call them! Too many recruiters just submit a resume without following up. You should expect and demand feedback, whether good or bad.

If you are employed and speaking to your recruiter in tough or impossible, take the initiative to set up “communication method” that works for you. For example all scheduling can be done via text and if conversation is in order, your recruiter can text you set up a time for you to step out. Implementing effective communication method with your recruiter can make your search a lot more effective!

Long-term Results

Don’t be discouraged if your IT recruiter can’t place you on your first round of trying. A long-term relationship built between the candidate and recruiter will absolutely increase the chances of finding the right job. Senior IT candidates keep lasting relationships with their trusted recruiter throughout their entire careers. If your recruiter is happy to take the time to get to know you and understand your background and goals without having a match on hand, you found a real specialist!

What To Avoid

Some things you don’t want to see from a recruiter:

  • Incomplete requirements
  • Resume submission without candidate-approval (yeah, we’ve seen it happen)
  • Their disappearing act (they’re out of touch and overly difficult to get a hold of)

You must be able to trust your recruiter to guide you along your career. So keep these basic ideas in mind, and you’re sure to find a recruiter that you and your future will be happy with.
